GREETING AND EXPLANATION OF SERVICE Rev. Blake Trent

*HYMN “Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed” No. 359

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “Apostles’ Creed” No. 881

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION Hymnal No. 13-14

Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved You with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done Your will, we have broken Your law, we have rebelled against Your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the name of Jesus Christ you are forgiven

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

(The money left at the altar will go to the Benevolence Fund to help those in need.)

STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR

(The ancient practice of stripping the Lord’s table and sanctuary following communion is a vivid and dramatic way of showing the desolation and abandonment of the long night in Gethsemane and what followed. Designated persons pick up altar elements and quietly carry them from the sanctuary. The church then remains bare until the Easter Vigil, when the process is reversed.)
